"Dr Richard Siddle works on minority issues in Japan from the perspectives of social anthropology and history. He has charted the historical unfolding of the processes of racialisation and ethnic mobilisation among the indigenous Ainu people in Race, resistance and the Ainu of Japan (Routledge 1996), and assessed the impact of the 1997 Ainu Cultural Promotion Act on Ainu identity politics. He is currently working on contemporary identity politics among the Ainu and Okinawans./Dr Siddle is also interested generally in the history of the notion of "race" in Japan, and specifically in how eugenics informed policies towards Japan's subordinated populations at home and in the colonies.”(source)
