「ある東洋の寓話を言い換えると、私たちは次のように言えよう；知識という家族のなかで、つまるところ科学は家の辛気臭い仕事をこつこつ行う家事娘であり、彼女はその卓越性が、世に知られず隠されている。彼女の技術、知性、そして献身により、あらゆる仕事に関わる彼女こそが、すべての重宝さであり満足さを兼ね備えている。彼女は安楽な人に仕え休みなく働いてきたが、彼女は家の奥に留め置かれてきており、他方で、彼女の傲慢な姉妹たちが、世界の衆目のもとで、そのけばけばしい衣服をひけらかすように振る舞っていたのである。このことはもはや続きはしない。私たちには大団円がすぐに近づきつつある。その立場が変わる時、これらの傲慢な姉妹たちは当然のごとく忘却され沈み、価値と美しさにおいて誉れ高い科学は、至高なものとして君臨するだろう」。

To her has been committed all the work; by her skill, intelligence and devotion, have all the conveniences and gratifications been obtained; and while ceaselessly occupied ministering to the rest, she has been kept in the background, that her haughty sisters might flaunt their fripperies in the eyes of the world. The parallel holds yet further. For we are fast coming to the denouement, when the positions will be changed; and while these haughty sisters sink into merited neglect, Science, proclaimed as highest alike in worth and beauty, will reign supreme."
