"Howard McGhee (b March 6, 1918 Tulsa, OK - d July 17, 1987 New York City) was one of the very first bebop jazz trumpeters, together with Dizzy Gillespie, Fats Navarro and Idrees Sulieman. He was known for lightning-fast fingers and very high notes. What is generally not known is the influence that he had on younger hard bop trumpeters, together with Fats Navarro.
Howard McGhee was raised in Detroit. During his career, he played in bands led by Lionel Hampton, Andy Kirk, Count Basie and Charlie Barnet. Howard McGhee was the one that brought bebop in California in 1946, a fact that was disapproved by older musicians like Kid Ory.Later life Drug problems sidelined McGhee for much of the 1950s, but he resurfaced in the 1960s, appearing in many George Wein productions. グーグルで日本の上位にくる情報は嗤える（というかアホくさくて、こっちが情けなくなる）「＜5012＞に続くマギーのBNにおける2作目の10inch盤である。歴史的観点からみて＜5012＞の方が名盤として知られているが、一リスナーの立場で聴くと本盤の方に愛着が湧く。この「なまぬるさ」が快適なのだ。銘菓と呼ばれるものより駄菓子のほうが美味しい場合が結構多い。と言っても本作が駄盤というわけでもない。メンバーを見るとファーローの存在が意外だが、これが一種独特の雰囲気を醸し出し、グライスの瑞々しいasとの対比が聴きもの。だが、ここでもやはりマギーの「無頼さ」が1本、筋の通った作品に仕上げている。それと、53年という時代を忘れさせる進歩性だ。ジャケットからのイメージはビ・バップを連想させるがこの時点で既にイースト・コーストの立派なハード・バップを演じている。チョット驚きでもある」（www.geocities.jp/bluespirits4196/aityoubann5.html）。
とまあ、いわゆる印象批評、昔の小学生［今日日の小学生はネットも使えるのでもっと気の利いたことが言えます］の読書感想文にみられた「感動した」「ボク好きや〜」という小泉（元）首相級――ということは日本を代表するということか？（ま昔のジャズ評論サブカル系のノリではある）ハハ情けない――の情報提供で終わっている。こういうコメントを恥ずかしげもなく書き込む連中が結構多いのだ！！
